A. Morrie Craig, PhD - Researcher, Consultant in Veterinary Toxicology

A. Morrie Craig, PhD, is an established researcher and consultant with an academic background in veterinary toxicology and biophysics. In 2015, A. Morrie Craig founded Willamette Consulting Services and continues to guide it.

In the early 2000s, he completed a Department of Defense Senior Scientist Fellowship at Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida through the National Research Council’s Associateship Award Program. Dr. Craig focused on sheep ruminal microorganisms and how stomach enzymes help degrade toxic alkaloids. These include those found in munitions and other nitroaromatic compounds, which render the environment nontoxic while being safe for sheep to ingest.

Dr. Craig also guided parallel studies that found perennial ryegrass and tall fescue effective in extracting munitions from the soil, which led to the creation of the USDA-recognized phyto-ruminal-bioremediation discipline. He has experience directing an analytical, diagnostic toxicology laboratory that met clients' needs across the Pacific Northwest. His lab analyzed samples of straw and feed destined for export across the Pacific Rim and undertook a veterinarian-requested analysis of fungal and plant toxins that might cause animal disease.

In addition, Dr. Craign has extensive experience in drug testing and the compliant application of medications to sled dogs and greyhounds before races. His work establishing optimal drug testing protocols for sled dogs in long-distance competition has helped ensure race fairness.
